Vision Simulations for Forensic Use: 305-726-1363

A major problem in litigating cases of damaged eyesight is how to demonstrate that damage to a jury. The problem is complicated by the fact that many people believe that visual acuity is all there is to vision. In fact, acuity can be 20/20 while the quality of vision is absolutely horrific. I function as an "intelligent pencil," meaning that I draw what the patients themselves would draw, if only they knew how.

As long as the patient can use the computer and receive email, no travel is necessary. We work back and forth across the internet, refining the simulations again and again until the patient says "That's what I see!" The final simulations are printed as high resolution 8 x 10s (which can be blown up to poster size for the courtroom) and look just like real photographs. Common simulations include trying to read, vision in dim indoor light, driving during the day and night, watching TV, and playing with children.

Possible scenarios include...

  • Eye Injury due to automobile accident, airbag injury, chemical burn, fireworks, and paintball injury.
  • Pharmaceutical reactions, such as the development of Stephen Johnson's Syndrome, or persistent blurry vision or retinal damage due to Viagra, Accutane, or Cox-2 Inhibitor (Vioxx, Bextra, Celebrex).
  • Failed Refractive Surgery, such as LASIK, LASEK, PRK, or IOL implant.
  • Failed cataract surgery or Strabismus surgery.
  • Vision changes due to traumatic brain injury or stroke
  • Workman's compensations and disability claims, based on any of the above.

I had LASIK in 1998 and experienced complications that include severe dry eye and fluctuating vision, which continue somewhat to the present day. So I have a kind of strong headstart in understanding the kind of complex perceptual and emotional issues that accompany distorted vision. The simulators and animations on this site provide a very simple example of what we can do. Permission is required for forensic use.

Sincerely,
